Parliament of WA Goes Gold!

We are so thrilled to see the Parliament of Western Australia helping to raise awareness for childhood cancer research by choosing to Go Gold in September.

Premier Mark McGowan and other Western Australian politicians have been proudly wearing our gold ribbons, a global symbol of childhood cancer awareness, to help spread the word about the need for more research.

Hon Matthew Swinbourn MLC, Member for the East Metropolitan Region and CLCRF member, also made a heartfelt speech in Parliament at the beginning of the month encouraging everyone to Go Gold.

This is a matter that is very close to Matthew’s heart, with his son Mitchell being diagnosed with Carney-Stratakis Dyad in July 2015 when he was just 10 years old. Matthew and his wife have since been advocating to raise awareness for the plight of all families who are affected by the terrible disease

“[Thank you] to those like the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation for doing what they can to support those searching for cures and treatment,” said Matthew. “We are fortunate that we have public and community funded organisations that dedicate resources to researching cures for childhood cancers. This is largely the reason we have seen such significant improvements.”

We would like to send a big thank you to Matthew for acknowledging the Foundation in his parliamentary speech. We would also like to thank all the other members of the Parliament of Western Australia who have been wearing our gold ribbons in support of childhood cancer awareness. It’s great to see those in positions of power doing what they can to support such an important cause in the community.

In Australia, 710 children aged 0-14 are diagnosed with cancer every year. Sadly, of these children, 100 lose their battle with the disease. The only way to eliminate childhood cancer and improve treatment is through research, which can only continue when there is awareness to help with the funding.
